Thiess Services Middle East LLC signs a 15 year waste management concession contract worth AED 1.1 billion with the Abu Dhabi Government.
Abu Dhabi, UAE - 5th February, 2009

Thiess Services Middle East - a joint venture between the Al Habtoor Leighton Group and Thiess Services - has signed a 15-year concession agreement with the Centre for Waste Management Abu Dhabi for the management of construction and demolition debris for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

This project, which involves the design and construction of a recycling facility to manage both construction and demolition waste in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, represents a major diversification of the Al Habtoor Leighton Group’s business in the Gulf.

Formed in 2008, Thiess Services Middle East LLC has been specifically established to provide waste management, utilities management, contaminated site remediation and facilities management services in the United Arab Emirates and broader Gulf region.

Executive General Manager of Thiess Services, Mr Michael Wright, and Managing Director of the Al Habtoor Leighton Group, Mr David Savage, said they were delighted to secure the project and congratulated the Centre for Waste Management on implementing a best practice sustainable solution for the Abu Dhabi construction sector.

“It is a credit to our client to have the vision and determination to beneficially recycle construction waste, which would otherwise have gone to landfill, and reduce the demand on natural resources brought in from other locations in the UAE,’’ Mr Wright said.

“Abu Dhabi is taking its carbon footprint reduction strategy very seriously indeed with projects such as this and we look forward to enhancing environmental management within the Emirate by providing the construction market with high quality recycled products,” Mr Savage said.

Construction of the new plant is expected to commence immediately on contract execution and be completed within 12 months.
